A small wind generatorWind generator is a device that transforms kinetic wind energy into electric power. Installations with capacity up to 100 kW are treated as small wind generators. They are used for supplying electric power to households, farms and small enterprises.As a rule a small wind generator consists of the following parts:- A three-blade wind wheel with a mechanical regulation system of rotation speed- A rudder tail or a weather vane- A mast- A generator- Energy distribution system and voltage regulator- DC-to-AC converter.A rudder tail or a weather vane is necessary for directing the wind generator in accordance with the current wind. A wind wheel rotates at wind speed from 3.5 metres per second.

Wind speed over 8-10 metres per second triggers a mechanical regulation system of rotation speed. The system changes the wheel’s axis of rotation by placing the wheel into horizontal plane thus decreasing rotation speed.When wind speed decreases the wheel returns into vertical plane under the effect of a special spring. Storage batteries are triggered in windless weather to feed the power-supply system. The batteries charge from the same wind generator in a normal mode of the system.The batteries may last from several hours to 2-3 days depending on their capacity and usage.A wind generator used in households usually has capacity from 400 W to 5 kW, wind wheel diameter from 1.5 to 7 m, and mast height from 6 m.

Measuring starting torque of wind generator

A 5 to 8 foot diameter wind blade needs starting torque of 1/6 foot-pound. You can measure this before making a blade purchase or build. Just attach a straight stick and measure as per my video. I estimate my 1/3 foot-pound generator resistance is starting to turn in a 10 mph wind. I’m going to try to improve that by doubling the diameter of the generator pulley, thus reducing starting torque by one half. Since wind force is tripled by velocity then 10mph/8mph = 1.25 and 1.25 x 1.25 x 1.25 = 2 Thus a double sized pulley should start in an 8 mph wind, instead of 10 mph.. I have come a long way. My new blade can easily start turning in very little wind if there was no generator attached (likely 2 mph). It still needs improving. I hope you learn the variables from my experience. With the new pulley choice, my voltages will be too low for my 48

volt battery bank. I will have to get into voltage tripling electronic circuits to add the 3-phase power windings in series by using capacitors, instead of my original simple six diode array rectifying it into VDC. At least with electronics I can add load to the system after it starts turning rather than before it starts turning, as it is now. After it starts turning, the blade operates more efficiently as airfoil characteristics take hold. Be forewarned that solar is easier than this, and more fruitful, for my poor wind location. I think wind uboobers show their best one day of the year and nothing else. Where did I get the 10 mph …
