Let’s face it; everyone uses electricity in their homes. With the use of a wind turbine generator, you can cut costs and save hundreds of dollars, annually. That’s money in your pocket that can be used for other things. Also, turbine generators are a very eco-friendly alternative to common electric.

WHAT IS A WIND TURBINE GENERATOR?

A wind turbine generator is a device that takes mechanical energy and transforms it into electrical energy. Basically, a turbine generator is simply an alternator attached to a propeller that uses the wind to produce electricity.

WHY WOULD I WANT ONE?

Wind turbine generators are relatively easy to install and are an eco-friendly alternative to electric. By using wind power that is converted to electricity, you will be able to have electricity in your home and save money all year long. This is an entirely clean source of electricity. These generators do not require a lot of maintenance, which makes them an excellent alternative.

IS GETTING A WIND TURBINE GENERATOR A PRACTICAL IDEA?

Absolutely! A generator is extremely cost effective and pays for itself in no time, with the money that you’ll save on electric bills. Not only are wind turbine generators cost effective, but they are also eco-friendly. Our environment is in such a state that we all need to cut down on the pollutants that we generate.  A wind turbine generator is an excellent way to accomplish this task. With both our economy and our environment in crisis, wind turbine generators just make sense for the eco- and cost conscious.

Wind power is an intelligent alternative to common electric. With easy installation, and little maintenance, a wind generator will cut your energy costs and help save the environment, which will not only give you a few extra bucks to stimulate the economy elsewhere, but is also a wonderful way to do your part to stop hurting our Mother Earth. Buying a wind turbine generator is extremely cost effective, but you can even build one by yourself. There are several design ideas available on the internet.

How To Build A Homemade Wind Generator Using Junk

Wind generators used to be far from affordable for the common household. But today, anyone can learn how to build a wind generator from home.

In fact, building one yourself can be really cheap and simple using junk material that you can source from your local garage or scrapyard.

Purchasing and installing a commercially made wind generator can set you back at least $3,000 for an entry-level unit. Personally, I feel the high cost involved is one of the major deterrents for low to middle income homeowners.

On the other hand, building a wind generator generally costs less than $500. Even better, by being resourceful and other people’s throw-away stuff, you can build a similarly efficient system with under $200. That is a stark difference from the amount of money you would have to shell out for a branded, factory manufactured wind generator.

Now, you’re probably wondering what kind of junk or reusable materials you could use to build your own wind generator. Among other things, PVC pipe and an old car alternator unit are the main elements.

PVC pipes are perfect for building the turbine blades and generator housing. They are easy to build with, yet still very sturdy. And with a few coats of weatherproof paint, your wind generator should be able to withstand the best and worst weather.

Car alternator work very well for transferring kinetic energy produced by the spinning wind generator blades into electrical energy that you can use for your home. A simple visit to your local garage and you could pick up a used car alternator for just a few bucks.

With the help of a solid wind generator plan, some basic hand tools, and a couple of days in your work shed or garage, you can certainly build your own windpower system using these junk materials.

How To Build Blades For Your Wind Generator

Simply put, a wind generator consists of a variety of parts that work together. If you will be building your own wind generator, you will need to know how to prepare the individual components and how to put them together.

The turbine blades are one of the most important parts of your wind generator system. Traditional designs have wind generators with three blades that rotate in the wind. Ideally, these blades should be sturdy enough to withstand very bad weather, yet light enough to be energy efficient.

Since you are building your generator at home, you obviously won’t be able to construct blades from carbon fiber or any exotic plastics. While older wind generator blades were built with wood, today, the preferred material for building your own turbine blades is PVC. In fact, most wind generator plans recommend using PVC pipes to build the blade.

PVC suits the purpose because it is easy to work with, yet tough enough for the job; plus, PVC pipes are definitely easy and inexpensive to obtain. The curvature of the PVC pipe also makes it a natural shape for building the blades.

You will want to use a PVC pipe with a diameter between 8 and 12 inches.

Cut it into three or four equal sections and trim it to be more aerodynamic. They blades don’t have to be huge, in fact, the ideal size of each blade should be 3 feet long.

Once you’ve cut the blades, use a generous coat of weatherproof paint to help your wind generator withstand rough weather. This is also where you can show off your creativity by making your wind generator as attractive as possible.
